Movie Reccomendation Thread

#1

I just opened up my DVD player and found “Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder”.

Do you know what that means? It means that I haven’t watched a new movie since Easter. EASTER!!!

So… I say we have a thread to correct that.

Rules:
Don’t reccomend movies that aren’t out on video or On Demand.
No Porn Reccomendations.
Don’t be gay and say “Pretty Woman” or “Memoirs of a Geisha”.

It doesn’t matter how long ago you saw the movie or how old it is. Just reccomend some shit and provide 1-3 sentences on what the movies is about and why you liked it.

What the fuck is wrong suggesting Memoirs of a Geisha that movie was good

Fine…

I’d say Eastern Promises is really worth seeing. Its about a Doctor in London who winds up dealing with the Russian mafia. Its kinda gory at times which made me wince but every character just feels so natural in their role.

We Are the Strange

I give it to you with German subtitles because the English version has an age restriction while the other one’s don’t…However, if you want a real trip, try watching his ‘1337’ version with his custom soundtrack:

Excuse me…I have to go order that movie now. It’s about a former strip club dance, Blue, who was cursed to turn ugly whenever she opened her mouth to speak. After being kicked out of her club, she wanders the forest alone where she meets a strange doll boy, Emmm. Emmm asks for very little in life and only longs to have some ice cream. However, the city is being overran by monsters.

The movie was done by one guy who goes by the name of mdotstrange. He spent 3 years working on the film in his basement and created a genre he calls “Str8nime” which is a mixture of: traditional capturing, stop-capturing, 8-bit work, anime, and computer graphics. The movie itself is a lot like Killer 7 in the sense of it makes no sense but then you realize it actually has meaning.

A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly is the film of Philip K. Dick’s novel of the same title. It has an independent film with a unique art style but it contains some big named actors like Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey, Jr. I haven’t read the novel, sadly, so I’m not sure how well it matches up but the film was very good.

A group A powerful drug known as Substance D has been released and is causing an increase in serious addiction cases. The government created a high-tech surveillance system with informants in order to gather any information regarding the source of the drug. The story follows a group of addicts who are currently being monitored, with one of them being a planted informant.

Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidoq (Vidoq)

Vidoq is a French suspense thriller from 2001 released as Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidoq here in the U.S. You can either watch it with sub titles or watch an English dub. Either way, the film is extremely good and is basically what the love child of Pan’s Labyrinth and V for Vendetta would be. The film is a fictional story based on the real Eugene Vidoq. It tells the story of Vidoq, a detective, on the trail of serial killer known as the Alchemist. He is killed while on his haunt when a younger journalist approaches his partner after his death asking for details regarding the Alchemist. The journalist was writing an autobiography on Vidoq and was now determined to locate the Alchemist and bring justice for the death of Vidoq, which sends the view on a story that hopes between Vidoq’s past investigation and “present” day.

It has a very unique art style with some bad ass fight scenes. The story is also surprisingly good; and it automatically wins for having Apocalyptica’s Hope as a title song. However, this movie is [b]not for kids. It has some really graphic stuff in it…

In the Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)

Das Leben der Anderen, or In the Lives of Others, is a German political thriller from 2006. I know there are English subtitles but I don’t remember if there was an English dub or not. Either way, the film tells a fictional story set in East Germany in 1984. An East German play writer, Georg Dreyman, is suspected of pro-Western sympathies and is seen as a possible threat to the East German imagine. He is placed under surveillance in order for his actions to be spied upon so if he becomes a threat, the government can step in. (Stuff like this actually happened by the way…) It tells the story of him struggling with life as the East German government begins to pressure him while also following the spy ordered to watch him, Wiesler.

The Host

The Host is a Korean monster-horror film that as far as I know, is only available with English subtitles. It is about a creature that appears to have been dumped from a lab that grows into a hideous monster that then begins to terrorize the city. The story follows a small family who loses their daughter to the creature, but they believe she may still be alive. Determined to find her, they begin their search while being chased by the government for having been exposed to the creature.

It sounds cheesy but in all honestly, it was very good. The CGI was amazing and it actually had a lot of good scenes in it. I highly enjoyed it.

Horror

Session 9 is a 2001 psychological horror film that is a total mindfuck. I posted the first 10 minutes of the movie because the trailer had scenes from the ending in it…Which sucks…Anyway, it tells the story of a hazmat cleaning crew hired to clean up an old asylum in order for it to be auctioned off. In the middle of his job, one of the members stumbles upon some old recordings from a previous case at the asylum before it was closed. As more of the recordings are played…The more the tension rises between the crew eventually leading to some violent situations…

It will keep you on your toes and is great for anyone who likes a film that makes them think.

Company of the Wolves

(Yes, w2d2, I watched it and loved it.) Company of the Wolves is an 80s werewolf film. Naturally, it will be dated but it was very good. The story (to me) was a mixture of Little Red Hiding Hood and the Beauty and the Beast as it tells the tale of a young girl growing up in a world were wolves can disguise themselves as men. While it is a bit generic, it had a nice charm to it.

Everything I posted you can find DVDs of or find on YouTube. >_>

I loved A Scanner Darkly. I’ll check out one or two of the others you reccomended, though.

I really enjoyed the preview of “The Host”, so I’m gonna check that one out first.

#5

The Host sucked, it was really uneventful IMO.

Little Shop Of Horrors - If you haven’t seen it you deserve death. It’s a musical about an alien plant that eats people lands in a ghetto and almost takes over the world.

Breaking News - Chinese movie about a bank heist between a gang of robbers that escapes into an apartment building and finds another group of criminals hiding in the same place. Has a pretty incredible ending.

I’ve seen Little Shop. It’s really good.

#14

Friday

#15

omg a penis if i see it i’ll be gay

#16

I didn’t say that. It was just unpleasant watching a bunch of little anime kids running around whispering sweet nothings in each others’ ears.

#17

I guess I should make a reccomendation now.

This movie is probably in my top five.

Most people think it’s more of a shock movie, though. It’s really raunchy and unpleasant at times, but it has a good plot and the main character learns a lesson. Don’t watch the director’s cut, though… it sucked ass.

#18

you all left/i stopped it before we even got to those parts you liar
